What is Liposuction and am I a good candidate?

Liposuction is an operations that can help us feel better about our bodies. Everyone has those areas of their body they feel to be a problem, despite the best exercise regimen or diet. Liposuction is an effective method that can improve problem areas and help provide the body that is desired. Liposuction is safe and with several different techniques used for the procedure, each and every individual looking to improve the appearance of their body can do so with the right surgeon.

What is “Super Wet Liposuction”?

Super Wet Liposuction is a liposuction technique where fluid is infused into a particular are of the body and then a hollow tube is used to remove the excess fat from the infused area. A small incision is required for the insertion of the tube. This form of liposuction is for the most part painless and quick.

What is “Laser Liposuction”?

Laser Liposuction is a Liposuction technique where a laser wand is inserted under the surface of the skin through a small incision. The laser wand uses a specific wavelength of light to break down and melt excess fat. There are four different manufacturers of this type of laser and each uses a different wavelength. While laser liposuction is one of the most popular forms of liposuction, it is often difficult to locate a plastic surgeon with the appropriate level of experience.

What is “Non-Invasive Body Contouring”?

Non-invasive body contouring is also a very popular method of liposuction. However, patients are often disappointing with the minimal amount of excess fat removed. In contrast, patients who opted for traditional liposuction tend to report how pleased they are with their results.

Keep in Mind…

Liposuction is a procedure perfectly suited for women and men. Although women tend to opt for liposuction considerably more often than men. Liposuction is a procedure that removed unwanted fat from beneath the surface of the skin. Liposuction cannot be used to remove the unwanted fat from behind the abdomen which tends to be an issue for middle aged men more so than women which may account in a small way for the lower number of men opting for this procedure.

Who is eligible for Liposuction?

Almost anyone can have liposuction, as long as you are healthy and have areas of unwanted fat. That said, liposuction is not for persons with excessive body fat. One should think of liposuction as a procedure for contouring an existing shape, not for massive weight loss. Obesity must be dealt with through diet and exercise. Your surgeon can advise you of the maximum BMI, (Body Mass Index) to safely benefit from liposuction.

If your skin is lose as a result of recent weight loss or other physical changes to your body, liposuction should also be avoided as the result of removing additional body fat will further increase the lose skin.

Your plastic surgeon will evaluate you completely and let you know if you are a good candidate for liposuction.

What you should know about liposuction

Although liposuction is generally a pain free procedure, like any surgery, it does come with some risks. Once you speak to a board certified plastic surgeon and have gained approval for liposuction, your Dr. will explain the risks associated to this procedure.

Liposuction does cause some swelling and bruising which can cause some discomfort that your plastic surgeon can prescribe pain medication for. Most patients report some minor pain and tenderness for 2-3 weeks after surgery. And most patients are able to return to work and limited activities within a week after surgery.

One should remember that liposuction is not permanent fat elimination. Your trouble areas can easily return after liposuction of you do not adjust the eating and exercise habits that resulted in your fatty areas in the first place. And those same areas of unwanted fat can come right back.
